I had Barbies and My Little Ponies, but I liked to climb trees and rocks and get muddy. Still, I also had this moment of wondering how I got myself into writing about a pageant. Girls can't avoid being aware of external beauty in this culture no matter how much they may want to. The fact that Celeste's transformation is seemingly small actually makes it quite profound. And that she comes to acceptance on her own makes it all the more satisfying. Great book and great article!
