Producing a well-honed manuscript does involve close collaboration with an editor. I once read an article by a young writer who had had the opportunity to read the original 1,000pg-plus MS. of Jack Kerouac’s ON THE ROAD. He felt the 250 page version was clearly the the result of a very skillful editor and that the verve and passion were a product of the editor as much as the writer. The original draft had no pace, what to speak of drive. It meandered all over the place. It wasn’t even a real “road” novel. This classic was as much the work of his editor as Jack – well not perhaps as much – but close enough.

I am fortunate to be one of Kara’s consulting clients. Kara was my Candlewick editor for The Dumpster Diver, and I was so happy when she launched Bluebird Works. I really love her editing style and her brutal honesty. I might find myself stubbornly clinging to part of a manuscript, working on it for weeks by myself…and with a five-minute explanation Kara will show me why it is flawed. I think of her as a personal trainer for my mind. Thank you, Kara, for all you do!!
