What is the Katherine Paterson Prize for YA and Children’s Writing?

An annual prize for writing for children. A chance for your writing for children to be read by Hunger Mountain editors and guest judges!

What will the winner receive?

One overall first place winner receives $1,000 and publication!
Three runners-up receive $100 each.  We choose one runner-up from the YA (young adult) entries, one from the Middle Grade entries, and one from the Picture Book or Writing for Young Children entries.

Who can enter the contest?

Anyone! Everyone!

Who is this year’s judge?

The 2010 judge is Holly Black, author of Tithe: a Modern Faerie Tale, Valiant, Ironside, and the Spiderwick Chronicles.

When is the deadline?

The postmark deadline is June 30th

Where is last year’s winning entry?

 Read “Crazy Cat” by Liz Cook, the first place winner of last year’s contest.

Check out “Tornado” by Susan Hill Long and “No Mistake” by Tricia Springstubb, two of last year’s runners up.

What are the guidelines?

  • $20 entry fee. Make checks payable to “Hunger Mountain” or pay with a credit card on paypal (scroll to bottom of page for Paypal link)
  • Entries must be postmarked by June 30th
  • Submit one story or novel excerpt (should be stand-alone) up to 10,000 words
  • You may include a synopsis if your entry is an excerpt, but an excerpt should still work as a stand-alone piece
  • Story must be original, written in English, and previously unpublished
  • Your name or address should not appear anywhere on the story
  • Once submitted, entries cannot be altered
  • All entries will be considered for general publication as well as for the KPP
  • No artwork, or translations please
  • Multiple entries allowed—each entry must include a separate entry fee

Does Hunger Mountain accept electronic entries?

  • Read the guidelines above
  • Go to www.hungermtn.org/submissions/
  • Create an account and upload your mansucript (we can only accept .doc, .docx, or .rtf files)
  • For “genre” choose Katherine Paterson Prize. Please don’t choose another genre, or we won’t know your manuscript is an entry into the prize!
  • Now pay the entry fee by sending in a check or using the paypal link at the bottom of this page.

Does Hunger Mountain still accept Snail Mail entries?

Yes. Feel free to send your entry through the mail. Here’s what to do:

  • Read all the guidelines above
  • Enclose with your manuscript a standard index card with the title of your work and your name, address, phone number, and email address
  • Either enclose an SASE for notification of winners or check www.hungermtn.org often for an annoucement of the winners
  • Entries should be typed, double-spaced, and on one side of the paper only
  • Use a paper clip or send unbound—no staples or binding, please
  • No entries will be returned
  • Email hungermtn@vermontcollege.edu if questions arise
