It's an interesting way to run a publishing firm,to deliberatly think in terms of quality before quantity and to keep the number of clients very small and select. Many authors flounder after an initial good start due to mismanagement. They need to be nurtured but they need to be worth the effort too; there are also mediocre authors and/or one-hit wonders who are artificially kept moving - selling - via over-publicizing,etc. I also like the emphasis on finding writers with a unique perspective and something to say. Y/A can really play a major formative role on a kid's mind and deserves to be respected as something more than entertainment. After 35 years I can still remember my favorite Y/A novel: Now That April's There by Daisy Neumann. It virtually became a part of me. It still is.

Great interview. Thank you to Emily Van Beek for sharing behind-the-scenes info about Pippin Properties. I can't wait to read THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE. Everyone in the MFA WC & YA program at Vermont College is excited about Jandy Nelson's debut YA novel!
