The road ahead looked grim for Nick Lantree, his reputation ruined and his dream of an English degree stripped from him by a band of lesbians Hell-bent on ridding the UofM system of men. His self-righteous moral superiority had brought him to this point and the blindness was spreading, fuelled by the burning desire to get back at the pack of she-wolves that, like so much wasted meat, had callously cast him and his harmless penis aside, he set out for revenge. To do this he agreed with himself that he would need money, of which he had very little after the sexual harassment fiasco, so he headed back to his hometown of Shockapee, Minnesota where every summer a renaissance fair hires locals to work and perform.
The fanciful garb that revealed masses of cleavage and the romantic atmosphere practically bursting from every corner had drawn Nick back to the fair every year since he was a very small boy. It had been his dream as a teenager to get a job as an entertainer in one of the fair’s shows, and he taught himself many of the dexterous arts in hopes that it would improve his chances, including juggling, fencing, and an amazing ability to sell lemonade. The last of which was what he ended up doing. Somewhat disenchanted by this placement, he quit after the first week and went to work in a paper mill where his father worked. Not giving up hope, Nick chose to apply again the following summer, with hopes of a job placement closer to his divine calling. Unfortunately for Nick, he was again given the less than coveted lemonade position, but was told there might be a possibility of getting into a show later on.
The fair took place in the open air and so was susceptible to all of Mother Nature’s moods, it was nothing new for there to be patches of mud sprinked athwart the fairgrounds. But excited by his prospects and heedless of danger, Nick practically skipped back through the fair grounds with reckless delight, and not noticing the muddy patch ahead skipped into it and slipped. He struck his head on a stone bench. He was found unconscious by Sabrina Henderson, a professional pole-vaulter and skilled improv-comedy performer; she aided his safe trip to Our Lady of Sorrow hospital in downtown Shockapee. She stayed by this stranger’s side all night thinking fanciful thoughts about the romantic potentials upon his awakening, until early the next day when Nick finally awoke with total amnesia. Sabrina Henderson was filled with glee when she saw her dark stranger she had cared for, but before he could fall madly in love with this strange and beautiful woman next to his bed or indeed ask where he was , a bullet ripped through the door and into his heart. He was killed instantly.
