The Exquisite Corpse Project
“The exquisite corpse will drink the new wine.” So wrote a group of bored Surrealists sitting around at 54 rue du Chateau. And the Exquisite Corpse was born: a collaborative form of unintended consequences that asks participants to contribute sequentially to a growing composition in order to create a work of mind-expanding—if unwitting—genius.
Hunger Mountain has invited members of the Vermont College of Fine Arts creative writing faculty to play an adapted version of this parlor game: each participant writes 1-3 pages of a story that we publish here at the HM website in monthly installments. No one knows exactly where this is leading, but there is no group of writers better suited to the work of expanding minds and advancing the cause of creative genius.
The title of our story “The Malleable Morning Bruises” was created by the editors of Hunger Mountain by way of a kind of mini-exquisite corpse process of our own. Enjoy the experiment and check back often to see how the story evolves.
